Freedom Of Oppression

Fighting for the freedom to be oppressed?  Is that a paradox or ironic?  Muslim ladies in France are protesting for their freedom, but their freedom is oppression.  I've never paid much attention to any religions outside of the Colossal Clusterfuck that is Christianity so I don't have an educated opinion about these niqab/hijab combos or burkas.  My initial reaction is that abuse victims become accustomed to the abuse and can't imagine anything else.

Just In Time For My Back To School Math Drama

Spotted in the newspaper today:  This episode of Frazz made me laugh out loud for real.  My boss started snickering at me.

Serial Killer Alert!!

Spotted:  Cute girl walking in front of our office.  Car pulls up beside her, driver says something to cute girl.  Cute girl giggles and keeps walking.  Driver parks car, gets out, and starts following her!!  Driver did not put money in meter.  Driver stops after a few steps and stands there looking in cute girl's direction as if he's expecting her to turn around and come back.

What was this guy from Alabama or something?  What girl in her right mind would jump in a car with some strange dude yelling at her from a car window?  I know this type of guy.  He looked to be about 50 to 55, wearing the matching shirt and pants set (linen even) and probably uses "look here, baby" liberally throughout his pickup monologue.  My God, I'm even imagining a toothpick hanging casually from his mouth.  Hey, Slick!

I Find This Hilarious In A Tragic & Mind-Bending Way

Black people on the streets of New York marching AGAINST civil rights!?!  How cute!!  Now please do return to the stultifying walls of your beautiful churches, supporting your lecherous priests and reverends and their luxe lifestyles while you struggle to make ends meet.

Favorite Quote from Rev. William Gillson:  "We are upset because you violated our law that is older and greater than New York." source   THEOCRACY NOW!

Pimps Up?

So my boss remarks after seeing this purple vehicle parked out front the other day that there was a "pimp mobile" out front.  He said Pimp Mobile, bitch!  I am officially the least urban person in our office.  I hate he missed this other vehicle, sitting up on however-many-inch rims.  I would try to make a correlation between this influx of pimp mobiles and the very recent phenomenon of weed odor wafting around but I'm not one to cast aspersions.

Labelled: Hmmmm, Interesting...

I ran across this article this morning (3:00am!  Visit me, Mr Sandman!), Frankie.  Naomi Campbell does not like to be compared to a chocolate bar and is contemplating suing Cadbury over a recent advert they ran mentioning her.  Okay, this ad is obviously based on her diva behaviour, and I don't think it was conceived to be a comment on her ethnicity at all.  And racist?  Come on, that is quite the stretch, there.  The reaction has been a bit shrieking from some corners, but they do make an interesting point.

I've long had a problem with people referring to black people as chocolate, milk chocolate, caramel or any other objectifying, food-based term.  I think it's dismissive and silly.  Every time I hear anyone going into their urban voice **cough, Tyra, cough** talking about a "fine, chocolate brother" or sister or whatnot, I wonder why that is considered a complement.  I suppose when black people do that, it's a way of embracing their skin tone?  When non-black people do it, is it their way of...well I'm stumped, I can't think of any reason that isn't based in comedy.

I've been approached by guys who say that they are only into chocolate and I would immediately lose interest.  Not just because of them equating me with food but also because they clearly aren't seeing me as a person, just a skin tone.  It is unfair to the other person.  They don't realize that I might take it as an insult because chocolate is fairly often used to describe black people.  In my mind, however, it goes back to that hypersexualization of blacks (notice how the word "chocolate" is always a guttural exaggeration, sometimes to the point of near-grunting) that was used in the past to consider us more on an animalistic level than on an "enlightened human" level.

Mind you, I would never, ever be mistaken for hypersexual but, uh...anyhoo...

Aw, How Cute!

Although she was ridiculously fantastic in the white gown she wore to the state dinner, this is the cutest picture of Michelle Obama from their jaunt to Merry Ol'...

Pop Culture Moment...

Did US Weekly really include a photo of Jess looking square-waisted on page 28, only to turn around on page 34 showing her in THE SAME DRESS AT THE SAME EVENT looking much slimmer?  Incredible.  Luckily, I only read that magazine for the weight loss advertisements or else I'd think they were trying to understand estimate my intelligents.

Also, some other staleness spotted while I was getting caught up on a backlog of magazines.  The Witches of Secaucus  or some other manner of unusual looking human female animals and a heifer on the loose.

What You Don't Want To See On The Way To The Bathroom: A Blood Trail

So I'm going to the bathroom at work and what do I spot in the hallway?  Oh, just a trail of blood is all.  Crime scene?  Sudden nosebleed?  Miscarriage?  This is the second mysterious blood pattern I've seen in this building.  Personally, I think someone should call in the Fringe division if they can get Olivia and Peter to stop holding hands long enough (!!! Olivia!  Holding hands!  I'm traumatized!).  This could be one of those weak spots between universes and all that blood on Walternate's hands could have physically manifested itself as real blood and dripped from his hands as he crossed back over.

And that concludes my late afternoon hunger-induced ramblings.

Yeah, Beccs!

After the Britney Zombie Blitzkrieg of this past week, how anyone can say "Friday" is the worst song ever is beyond me.  Personally, I think the song is cute, catchy, age appropriate and 100 times better than some stuff I've heard from established artists lately.  Once the easily-influenced masses get told how they are supposed to feel about a thing, that's all she wrote, hence the almost unanimous disdain for this perfectly harmless song.  I spotted this video of Rebecca Black poking fun at the phenomenon that is her debut song.

I spotted this Wizard of Id comic strip on the Comics Curmudgeon website and I am not joking...I was eating a hot dog and laughed so hard and unexpectedly that I nearly choked on it.  Sick and hilarious!

Floored, As It Were...

I'm pretty much crazy about clunky boots, so when I saw that Antebellum Blog had put up a post about boots I had to check it out because Antebellum always has some great fetish material.  So, I click over and spot these madref**kers!!  Good Gravy!, they are all kinds of hot and totally making me think I need to be clicking on over to Zappos.com to see what they have in the way of hot ass mid-calf boots with contrasting laces.

Awwwwww!!

So I'm in Ralphs yesterday buying a sponge and some ravioli when this adorable little puppy sitting on the shelf catches my eye.  I actually let a very audible "Awwwwww!!" and had to get him.  I will name him Roscoe.

The Mind Wobbles...

So, I'm reading a post from Sam Harris, his Afterword to his book "Letter to a Christian Nation," and as usual I am thoroughly engrossed and wowed by his insight.

Toward the end of the piece, he notes an argument that people have used as a rebuttal to the ideas in his book:  "Many readers of 'Letter to a Christian Nation' have taken inspiration from Blaise Pascal and argued that evidence (of God) is beside the point and that religious believers have simply taken the wiser of two bets: if a believer is wrong about God, there is not much harm to him or to anyone else, and if he is right, he wins eternal happiness; if an atheist is wrong, however, he is destined to spend eternity in hell" to which Harris responds "... Another problem with the wager—and it is a problem that infects religious thinking generally—is its suggestion that a rational person can knowingly will himself to believe a proposition for which he has no evidence. A person can profess any creed he likes, of course, but to really believe it, he must believe that it is true. To believe that there is a God, for instance, is to believe that you are not just fooling yourself; it is to believe that you stand in some relation to God’s existence such that, if He didn’t exist, you wouldn’t believe in him. How does Pascal’s wager fit into this scheme? It doesn’t" (The Empty Wager).

My first thought on reading the "wiser of two bets" statement was that it would be the same as my trying to convince myself that I like onions because I've been told that if I don't eat onions, I'll be doomed to a life of flavorless food.  There I would sit, singing the praises of a Bloomin' Onion, all the while hating it; on the other hand, I could continue to refuse onions and spend an eternity denied the experience of having an overly aggressive bulb overwhelm the flavor of every dish it's in. *scoffs*  Comparing the triviality of onion flavoring to questions of religious belief?  Yes.

The real reason I brought this up, however, is because I spent a good twenty minutes trying to grasp the meaning of this sentence:  "To believe that there is a God, for instance, is to believe that you are not just fooling yourself; it is to believe that you stand in some relation to God's existence such that, if He didn't exist, you wouldn't believe in him."  It's sitting right outside of my comprehension, like the meaning of "ironic."  I don't understand the last part, but I'm sure I'm over-thinking it.  Why would a person who is a believer have an occasion to think that if God didn't exist, he or she wouldn't believe in Him?  Is it "God exists, and I believe in him.  If God did not exist, I would have no impetus to believe in a god, therefore my very belief in God proves there is a God"?

I just know I'm going to be watching TV later tonight and this is still going to be going through my head.  On a side note, look how cute Sam is!

Spotted

On top, Secretia's intro catch-phrase, which always makes me happy and at the bottom, an insult that would drive anyone to drink that was spotted over at web comic Kyle's Bed & Breakfast, which cracks me up big time and, at the same time, is very compelling.

**On an important side note:  One has nothing to do with the other, they just ended up on the same page in my notepad because I spotted them both today!!**
